It has come to my attention I love looking at birds, so now it's everyone's problem. Also a poem that sees something in everything, from the last winter I lived in Chicago.
Yes, I too have started to be birding! When we moved here we stopped the rampant poisoning the suburban ground we live on and so many delightful things happen when you do that!!
I, too, have recently become obsessed with birds. I thought maybe it was just my age, getting older, you know. Perhaps something is happening we’re unaware of … or birds are just mesmerizing creatures.
both/and, almost always right? maybe it's learning to stay still long enough to notice how interesting the world is without having to do a thing, or cultivating a deeper appreciation or hunger for simple astonishment...but it is 100% absolutely and for sure that birds are just mesmerizing, and beautiful, and cool as hell, and they reward our attention so thoroughly. any good bird action where you're in this transitional season?
I imagine bird action is abundant here. I am in the Northeast. I hear the sparrows in the morning, but I spend all my time with a laptop between me and a wall.
in the thick of covid I lived in a basement apartment with no meaningful windows. I had just learned of the game Wingspan and there's a computerized version which sings you the songs of the birds you pick, and gives you fun bird facts. it was a saving grace for me in that cave-covid-era. after reading your piece I want to go play it again !!!!! though I get to watch real birds now which is a treat...
i lived there, once. in a way, it was helpful for learning to live with spiders. in the same way, it was one of the weirdest years of my life.
grateful to be out of our caves, for every bird everywhere (mostly), and for you, for everything always, but also for telling me about wingspan, which i just ordered. come over whenever. ♥️
My eyes have never been more open since we moved here almost a year ago. I guess that's because there are so many new things to see, like birds and mountains and funny-shaped houses. I've been particularly in love with the hummingbird community around our feeder and the "it's MINE" orange Rufous (Rufi?) who dive-bomb the littler ones when they try to take a sip. Also, I love your poem.
